Over the past couple of years I’ve had the opportunity to experience a number of unique places to stay in New Zealand, from rustic off-grid huts to luxury glamping sites. These memorable escapes offer something special for every kind of traveller—whether you’re chasing views, soaking in hot tubs, or simply looking to unwind in nature.
Discovering Unique Stays with Canopy Camping
If you’re searching for unusual accommodation in New Zealand, the Canopy Camping website is the perfect place to start. It features a curated collection of off-the-beaten-path stays across the country, from cabins and yurts off the beaten track to luxury tents with coastal views.
Rua Hiwi Hut – Off-grid escape in Waikato
When considering winter-friendly unique stays in New Zealand, my friend Renee and I opted for a warm hut over a tent—and Rua Hiwi Hut was the perfect choice.
Located on a 130-hectare farm on the southeastern side of Mount Pirongia in the Waikato, the hut’s name comes from the Māori words Rua Hiwi, meaning “two ridges.” After leaving our car near the host’s house, we were driven up a 1500m four-wheel-drive track to the hut.

This off-grid accommodation runs on solar power and gas, with a woodburner that kept us cosy and warm. The views were stunning and ever-changing, and thoughtful touches like hot water bottles and bathrobes made the experience even more special.

Fossil Hill: A Luxury Cabin in the Wairarapa
If you’re looking for a unique stay in New Zealand, Fossil Hill in the Wairarapa is a stand-out. Just ten minutes from Masterton, this luxury cabin is set on an elevated marine sedimentary rock hill, home to fossils dating back over 2 million years.

Crafted from reclaimed timber, the cabin features a spacious open-plan living area with modern comforts in a peaceful, scenic setting. On arrival, guests are welcomed with a bottle of local sparkling wine and homemade baking—a warm and thoughtful touch that sets the tone for a relaxing getaway.

The attention to detail is exceptional, with everything from a shot measure to zip-lock bags for leftovers thoughtfully provided. Outside on the deck sun loungers offer panoramic views across the Wairarapa landscape, while the huge stone outdoor bath invites you to soak under the stars.

If you’re seeking a tranquil retreat, Fossil Hill is a standout destination for a memorable escape.
Sophie’s Glamping – retreat in the bush in Mid Canterbury
Named after the owner’s daughter, Sophie’s Glamping is a charming Canopy Camping site in Mid-Canterbury near Methven’s hot air balloon rides. There had a been a significant downpour on the day we arrived, Ellen (the host) was incredibly communicative and offered to reschedule or compensate us.
We chose to go ahead with the stay, and the round yurt-style tent was warm, dry, and beautifully decorated. It featured a comfy bed, couch, fireplace, and a separate, thoughtfully decorated chemical toilet. There was also an outdoor shower but I ran out of patience in the rain before the water was hot enough for me to use it.

The wood-fired hot tub—pre-heated for us—was the highlight of the stay. Although the rain limited our use of the outdoor kitchen and seating areas, with a fire ban in place in the region the owners had thoughtfully placed an enclosed fire in the fire pit.

Te Hāpua Coastal – Glamping with Coastal views on the Kāpiti Coast
Te Hāpua Coastal is one of two glamping sites at Kapiti Glamping Adventures, located above Te Horo Beach. The Moroccan-style tent features a double bed and a huge veranda with breathtaking views of the ocean, Kāpiti Island, and even Mount Taranaki on clear days.

Visiting in April, we spent most of our time relaxing on the veranda and soaking in the wood-fired hot tub, which stayed warm overnight for a morning soak before checkout.
The ensuite bathroom—with coastal views—includes a flushing toilet, basin, and gas-powered shower. Everything was sparkling clean and well-maintained.

A note on Canopy Camping’s Cancellation Policy
It’s worth noting that Canopy Camping’s cancellation policy can be strict. When I tested positive for Covid the day before a planned stay, I was lucky to have booked with an understanding host who allowed us to rebook. Always check the policy and communicate with your host if something unexpected comes up.
