Must do in Peru

Here are the activities you must do in Peru for an unforgettable trip.

The ultimate must do in Peru: Visit Machu Picchu

No trip to Peru is complete without visiting the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu. By hiring a local guide you can learn all about the history of this UNESCO World Heritage site which is perched high in the Andes and has stunning views. Whether you hike there, take the adventurous Inca Jungle trail, or catch the train from Cusco, you will come away inspired.

Go sandboarding and dune buggy riding in Huacachina

After Paracas, head to Huacachina, an oasis in the Peruvian desert surrounded by sand dunes. I went sandboarding in Huacachina as well as spending a night glamping in the desert. It’s a magical spot whether you’re racing down the dunes or watching the sunset.

See the Paracas National Reserve

Just a few hours drive from Lima, Paracas has stunning coastal scenery and a heap of wildlife. Take a boat tour of the Ballestas Islands, also known as the Peruvian Galapagos to see sea lions, penguins, and many other bird species. You can also catch a spectacular sunset over the desert dunes in the Paracas National Reserve.

Lake Titicaca floating islands

Sitting at 3,812 metres, Lake Titicaca, near Puno, is the highest large lake in the world. Book a tour through a local operator to visit the floating islands which are man-made of totora reeds that Lake Titicaca is famous for. Communities have preserved their unique way of life here for centuries.

Be prepared for the islands to be a bit of a tourist trap with the local chief pushing hard for you to purchase crafts, eat at the restaurant and sail on the reed boats which are called balsa.

Visit Cusco

It blows my mind that at 3,399m above sea level, the city of Cusco is situated higher than the summit of Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain.

Cusco was once the capital of the Incan Empire. There’s plenty to see and do in the city, which is fortunate as it can take a few days to acclimate to the altitude:

    • Wander around the cobblestone streets of Cusco to explore the San Pedro Markets which have local crafts and delicious food, and landmarks like Plaza de Armas. Our group took a free walking tour which really explained the architecture of the city too.

    • Take a Peruvian Cooking Class and learn how to prepare traditional dishes like ceviche with local ingredients.

    • Learn how to mix the perfect Pisco Sour, Peru’s national drink, or just visit a rooftop bar to drink one with a view of the city.
    • Take a day trip to see the stunning, colourful landscapes of the iconic Rainbow Mountain/ Red Valley.

Whether you’re hiking the Inca Trail, exploring the vibrant streets of Cusco, or adventuring in Huacachina, every moment will be filled with wonder.
