You can find the famous Hobbiton from the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films in Matamata, less than 2 and a half hours drive from Auckland in New Zealand. Hobbiton is on private property so you can’t just wander in and take a look. You also won’t see much from the main road, but if you’re interested in exploring Hobbiton, for $89 per adult you can take a tour.
The history of Hobbiton
Alexander farm was discovered in an aerial search of farmland by Peter Jackson and his crew when they went looking for a site for Hobbiton for scenes in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The property’s man-made lake, landscape and round tree (a perfect representation of the Party Tree) confirmed it as the setting.
The original set was constructed out of temporary materials and taken away when filming was completed. It was rebuilt in 2009 out of permanent materials for the filming of The Hobbit Trilogy and has been maintained as a tourist attraction since.
Most of the hobbit holes are not deep enough to go inside but one is open to stand in and take photos. I loved how the occupation of each Hobbit is reflected in what’s outside their door – for example cheese, fish, woodwork or flowers.
Exploring Hobbiton
We were exploring Hobbton in summer and the tour bus out to the site was packed. In winter it’s likely to be quieter.
I’m not a huge fan of the films but it was still a very cool place to visit. The guided tour concludes with a complementary drink at The Green Dragon Inn which is certainly one of the highlights.
New Zealand is so high on our bucket list. Ever corner of the island looks so beautiful!!

Aw hope you get the chance to cross it off soon Tracey! The variety in beautiful landscapes is pretty special.
Looks amazing! I’m not a fan of the movies either (or the books I must admit) but I can see how it’s still a great place to visit anyway – adding it to my list!

It was a pretty magical place and should definitely be on your list!
How magical. I haven’t jumped on board the Hobbit train but was a big fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The nine hours of movies which was the Lord of the Rings trilogy was about enough for me too! It’s great the way the guides remind you of the scenes, who appeared in each Hobbit house etc.
Sounds lovely for those who love the Hobbit trilogy.

I definitely think you should go! Thanks for stopping by 🙂
I would have loved to see Hobbiton on our last trip to NZ but I must admit I was a bit put off by the price, especially since my other half wouldn’t know a hobbit from a hangover.

Some of the people on the tour might have been mistakable for Hobbits… 😉
